These are a few ideas/headcanons that I and Jethro had thought of concerning the princesses.
On the sisters:
- While it is their duty to bring the day and night, their power is somewhat connected to the celestial bodies that they move. Losing connection to, or having them taken, temporarily severs their connection and weakens them. They do not entirely rely on them for life, but part of their power is intertwined with their sun and moon.
- Celestia may be weakest during solar eclipses, while Luna may be weakest during new moons when there is no moon visible in the sky.
On Luna, specifically, how she became Nightmare Moon as the show doesn't entirely explain it (disregarding the comics entirely):
- We're not entirely sure how Luna became Nightmare Moon, but there seems to be a certain fairy tale flair in which that strong feelings of jealousy and envy would have corrupted her and changed her the way it had.
On immortal alicorns:
- There may have even been an entire race of immortal alicorns before Luna and Celestia, as they seem to be the last. Alicorns aren't innately good as a species, and being as powerful and long lived as they are, are probably prone to falling to darker impulses, or a buildup of powerful negative emotions with rage being the most prominent. Luna, when and why she would have become Nightmare Moon, would be one such example.
*We're ignoring a/certain comic(s) as these headcanons are more preferred than, well, comics' canon.
